Loy Krathong 2025: Traditional festival with a new environmental focus!
People in Bangkok are still looking forward to this year's Loy Krathong Festival with great anticipation. On November 5, 2025, Wat Arun will be transformed into a radiant backdrop for one of Thailand's most important celebrations. Minister Sabida Thai Setthakhet recently announced the details of the event, which this year has the theme “Loy Krathong Thai Thai – safe and environmentally conscious, in traditional Thai clothing”. Line Today reports that not only cultural identity and tradition are celebrated, but environmental awareness should also be the focus.
The 48th Loy Krathong celebrations are being planned in collaboration with the provinces of Chiang Mai, Sukhothai, Tak, Roi Et and Samut Songkhram and other organizations. Over 33 partners are involved to showcase the uniqueness and diversity of Thai culture, making the event a landmark for local traditions and identity. Daily News highlights that millions of people take part every year, making the celebrations a significant economic driver. Last year, the festival attracted over 6.6 million participants and generated revenue of over 8.3 billion baht.
Tradition meets modernity
The prominent event will not only promote traditional Thai clothing, with specially designed styles for men and women, but also use innovative interactive technologies. In addition to cultural performances, visitors will be able to enjoy typical Thai dishes from different provinces. So every Krathong that is placed in the water becomes a sum of tradition and modern consciousness.
To make the celebrations more environmentally friendly, waste management is taken into account and the focus is on reducing plastic. The demonstration of dishes from different regions and the presentation of traditional sweets will also captivate visitors. In addition, the event is promoted in 18 provinces, increasing participation and support of local traditions.
A celebration for everyone
By inviting Thais and foreigners to wear traditional Thai clothing, the minister hopes to strengthen cultural identity. The Loy Krathong festival has not only cultural but also religious roots. On this night, people release krathongs, often made from banana stems and leaves, into the water to thank the water goddess Phra Mae Khongkha and ask for forgiveness. This tradition, which is more than 800 years old, has its origins in the Sukhothai Kingdom and reflects the Thai people's strong connection to water. Thailand Foundation states that the festival in its essence symbolizes joy, gratitude and new beginnings.
The Loy Krathong Festival is more than just a celebration. It is a significant cultural experience that reflects the values and respect of the Thai people. So be there when Bangkok shines in a sea of lights on November 5th and people's hearts come together to combine tradition and modernity in a unique celebration.
