Experiential Festival of Secondary Cities: Sustainable Tourism in Thailand!

In Bangkok, the signs point to sustainability in tourism. From November 28th to 30th, 2025, IMPACT Muang Thong Thani will host the first major secondary cities event in Thailand: the Festival of Secondary Cities, also known as “เทศกาลเมือง (ต้อง)รอง”. Under the motto “Secondary City – A City Everyone Should Try,” 55 provinces from five different regions are taking part. After the difficult times caused by the pandemic, this is a great opportunity to focus on responsible and sustainable tourism, as Workpoint Today reports.

Spanning over 11,000 square meters, visitors can immerse themselves in a variety of activities and experience what these lesser-known cities have to offer. The highlights of the festival include exciting VR tours, lively exhibitions, workshops and markets, all of which are focused on environmental friendliness and cultural discovery. An interactive exhibition entitled “Travel Responsibly” will deal intensively with the topics of environment, culture and society.

Activities and workshops for everyone

The event relies on active participation. Six different activity zones offer workshops. In the Northern Region, participants can learn how to make traditional Akha jewelry, while the Central Region creates interesting dolls and keychains. The Northeast region offers the Eco Print technique, the Eastern region revolves around the art of floral wreaths, and the Southern region focuses on items made from marine debris. A network zone will also be presented in which five hidden gems from each region will be presented.

The festival places particular emphasis on incorporating modern elements, such as the Carbon Explorer Game and the Waste Sorting Game, to convey environmental awareness in a playful way. With the support of artists, the event becomes a cultural celebration that attracts visitors from near and far.

Promoting lesser-known cities

In parallel, the [Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT)](https://thai.tourismthailand.org/Articles/%E0%B8%AA%E0%B8%B8%E0%B8%82%E0%B8%97%E0%B8%B1%E0%B8%99%E0% B8%97%E0%B8%B5-%E0%B8%97%E0%B8%B5-%E0%B9%80%E0%B8%A1%E0%B8%B7%E0%B8%AD%E0%B8%87%E0%B8%A3%E0%B8%AD%E0%B8%87) launched a project dedicated to promoting tourism in 55 lesser-known cities in Thailand. The aim is to encourage travelers to have new experiences and enjoy local culture and cuisine. To support this, special offers will be made available through local supermarkets and platforms such as Big C and Traveloka.

Tourists have the opportunity to receive discounts on hotel bookings and restaurant visits by accumulating points in the Big C Plus app. Amarin Television will also support the project through advertising to attract more travelers to these charming corners of the country.

Sustainability in focus

The trend is clearly towards sustainable tourism. According to Thai Now, new travelers are embracing self-discovery in meaningful places as more international tourists become more aware of their environmental impact. This brings a breath of fresh air to Thailand's tourism sector, which not only relies on high visitor numbers, but also on sustainable practices. Hotels that have received the “Green Hotel” certificate are role models, and projects such as the “Food Before Waste” initiative in Phuket ensure responsible use of resources.

Whether discovering the insider tips in the secondary cities or enjoying local specialties - Thailand has a lot to offer. The upcoming events and projects impressively show that responsible tourism is not only possible, but also extremely attractive. Pack your bags and immerse yourself in the diversity and beauty of Thailand!
