Loy Krathong 2025: A celebration of tradition and environmental awareness in Thailand!
In Bangkok, on October 22, 2025, a press conference was held in the small meeting room of the Thailand Cultural Center in preparation for the annual Loy Krathong Festival. Chaired byMs. Sabida Thaiseth, Minister of Culture, representatives from various provinces and cultural authorities presented the plans for this year's event. What is particularly noteworthy is that 33 institutions are involved in the design of the festival, which underlines the importance of this celebration for Thai culture.
The theme of the 2025 festival is:“Loy Krathong Thai, safe and environmentally conscious, in traditional Thai clothing”. The event aims to promote cultural identity and preserve traditional crafts and regional cuisines. The main event will take place in the impressive surroundings ofWat Arun Ratchawararam Ratchawaramahawihanwill take place where cultural performances and innovative technologies, including a drone show, will ensure unforgettable moments. The event will provide a significant platform to display eight traditional Thai costumes in the form of LED drone animations.
A festival full of tradition and innovation
The Loy Krathong Festival is more than just a celebration; it is an expression of Thailand's cultural heritage. The festival is celebrated annually in November, on the full moon of the twelfth month of the Thai lunar calendar, and people give thanks to the water goddessPhra Mae Khongkha. A “krathong,” a small boat-like basket, is decorated with flowers, candles and incense sticks and placed in the water. This tradition represents gratitude and letting go of negative emotions.
Another highlight of this year's celebration will be the culinary presentation, where each participating province will present its own dish. Daily News reports that Loy Krathong is being promoted in 18 provinces and various districts of Bangkok to reflect local traditions. Last year, the festival recorded over 8.3 billion baht in sales and attracted more than 6.6 million participants. Even larger numbers of participants and economic incentives for tourism are planned for 2025.
Loy Krathong and the UNESCO nomination
A central goal of this year's celebration is to promote Loy Krathong as an intangible cultural heritage UNESCO to nominate. The Thai government has already approved an application to preserve and strengthen the cultural status of this unique festival internationally. With this move, Thailand hopes to consolidate international recognition for its rich cultural traditions. The government is particularly keen to support conservation measures that are of enormous importance for traditional crafts and local customs surrounding the festival.
Both national and international participants are invited to take part in the festival in traditional Thai clothing. “We want to show joy and solidarity while preserving our traditions,” emphasized Ms. Sabida Thaiseth at the press conference.
