Thailand's mourning: Queen Mother Sirikit dies at 93!

On October 25, 2025, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul addressed the Thai people in a moving televised statement. The reason for his speech was the painful loss of Queen Sirikit, the mother of the country, who died on October 24, 2025 in Chulalongkorn Hospital at the age of 93. Anutin described her death as a great loss to the nation and paid homage to her as a source of inspiration, love and compassion.

In the statement, Anutin emphasized the invaluable contributions of the late queen, who had contributed to crafts, nature conservation and healthcare over several decades. As a mark of respect, the government plans to organize the funeral with dignity and the population is invited to show their grief and mourn together. The Prime Minister also expressed his gratitude to the Queen and prayed for her peace in the afterlife. International media also reported on her death and recalled her travels with the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

Mourning period and ceremonies

The official mourning period for Queen Sirikit was set at one year. On October 26, 2025, the royal ceremonies begin at the Dusit Maha Prasat, the Grand Palace. The first act of mourning will be the collection of the body by King Vajiralongkorn and Queen Suthida. This occurs at 3:42 p.m., with the body being transported in a royal vehicle that was also used for the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

The population's expressions of grief are diverse. Public establishments will lower their flags to half-mast for 30 days, and people will be asked to wear inconspicuous clothing during the mourning period. There are numerous commemorative posts on social media and television. From October 27 to November 8, 2025, the body will be displayed for veneration in the Sahaithai Hall in the Grand Palace.

Health problems and life's work

Queen Sirikit had been struggling with health problems for a long time. In September 2019, she was admitted to Chulalongkorn Hospital where she was treated for various health difficulties. Most recently, blood poisoning was diagnosed on October 17, 2025, which ultimately led to her death. In 2012, she took part in the ceremony marking the 2,600th anniversary of Buddha's enlightenment, but her health has deteriorated significantly since then.

Royal ceremonies honoring the body will be carried out in phases until February 2026, with the cremation organized by the Department of Arts and Culture. This is a fitting tribute to Queen Sirikit's tireless service and legacy, which has left a lasting impression on Thai society.
