Thailand Pavilion in Shanghai: 60 companies inspire buyers!
In a colorful showcase of Thai heritage, the Ministry of Commerce today formally opened the Thailand Pavilion at the China International Import Expo 2025 (CIIE 2025) in Shanghai. Over 60 Thai companies have come together to showcase their tasty food and beverage products. If the delegates agreed on a target of at least 220 million baht in trade volume to strengthen relationships with Chinese buyers and importers, they have the right feel for good business.
The Thai exhibitors show a colorful range: from authentic dishes such as “Pad Krapow Moo Sap” (pork with Thai basil) to variations of fresh and processed fruit as well as innovative products made from the popular jasmine rice. Interest in lifestyle products as well as health and cosmetic items is also high, generating lively business discussions that are expected to further strengthen economic ties between Thailand and China. CIIE 2025 will take place at the National Exhibition and Convention Center, an impressive exhibition venue spanning over 1.5 million square meters.
Economic context and historical connections
Officially known as the Kingdom of Thailand, Thailand has a long history dating back up to 40,000 years. As the only country in Southeast Asia to escape colonization, it has developed into a major regional economic power. With an area of around 513,115 km² and approximately 66 million people, Thailand has a diverse population, mostly of Thai ethnicity, while around 1.3% are Burmese. The capital Bangkok, a vibrant metropolis, attracts tourists from all over the world every year and is a central hub for trade and culture.
Economically, Thailand faces strong competition. The main sectors are industry, agriculture and tourism. What is particularly noteworthy is that Thailand is one of the largest rice exporters in the world and thus exports its food production. The jasmine rice, which will be promoted during CIIE 2025, is one of the top products.
Political situation and international relations
While Thailand has experienced turbulent political times in the past, including conflicts since the 2000s, the country remains a crucial player in the ASEAN region. The political landscape is characterized by tensions that most recently emerged during the political crisis of 2025, particularly regarding the border conflicts with Cambodia. Despite these challenges, Thailand has positioned itself as an important non-NATO ally of the US and plays a significant role in the region's geopolitical affairs.
Looking ahead to CIIE 2025, Thailand is determined to showcase its cultural and economic heritage on a global stage while opening up new markets in China. Today's opening of the Pavilion is just the beginning of a promising era for Thailand's export economy.
A visit to the CIIE can not only boost business, but also strengthen bridges between cultures. So, dear readers, look across the pond and observe the exciting developments - there is something coming!
