Traffic chaos in Bangkok: diversion to Vibhavadi Rangsit Road until the end of November!

Things could go haywire for road users in Bangkok in the coming weeks. The Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) announces a major traffic change that will have an immediate impact on Vibhavadi Rangsit Road. From November 1st to November 30th, 2025, a diversion along the popular transport route is necessary to make space for the construction of a D-Wall at the future Din Daeng station (OR11).

Four lanes near Vibhavadi Rangsit Park are affected. The diversion is being implemented by Ch. Karnchang Public Company Limited and the MRTA requests road users to avoid this route if possible. At the same time, the parallel roadway in the direction of Ratchaprarop remains accessible with four lanes, so that residents continue to have access to their homes.

Construction work and possible impairments

According to Ms Kittikorn Tanpaow, Deputy Managing Director of the MRTA, the structural changes are part of the highly complex Orange Line subway project being undertaken by Bangkok Expressway and Metro Public Company Limited (BEM) is organized. As part of this work, exploration of the infrastructure will begin from November 15, 2024. The first five stations include significant points such as Bang Khun Non and the Democracy Monument and are expected to be operational by 2030.

But the diversion and construction come at a price: road users have to expect longer travel times and potentially increased noise. Clear information communication and traffic signs are essential to keep disruption to a minimum. The relevant authorities are working closely with the police to minimize the impact on traffic flow and ensuring that traffic staff are available to survey the forest of signs.

A cityscape in transition

A dramatic example of the challenges associated with urban infrastructure recently occurred in Bangkok. A massive road collapse in front of a hospital left a crater measuring 30 by 30 meters and 50 meters deep. Engineers are looking into the causes of the earthmoving, and while no injuries were reported, thousands of patients and residents had to be evacuated as a precaution. The Vajira Hospital stopped outpatient operations while inpatients continued to be cared for. Traffic in the area is still backed up as authorities work hard to stabilize the area.

The upcoming diversions and the status of road and subway construction in Bangkok undoubtedly represent a challenge, but also bring long-term infrastructure improvements.
