Thailand ready for the aviation revolution: drones as air taxis!

The Thai aviation industry is currently pushing hard towards Urban Air Mobility (UAM). An important step in this direction was taken today, November 2, 2025, by the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (กพท.) and the National Telecommunications Company (NT), which signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). The aim of this collaboration is to develop a drone delivery system that aims to use unmanned aircraft for various transports. As Post Today reports, the application includes not only agriculture and area surveys but also the transport of goods and passengers.

For this innovative mobility solution, the passenger drone type EH216-S was presented, which was developed by EHang Intelligent Equipment from China. This autonomous vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft has the potential to not only relieve traffic but also be more environmentally friendly. The two-seater aircraft, which is fully electrically powered, could meet the high demands for sustainable mobility in Thailand. According to The Nation, it is designed for urban environments and runs on 100% electric energy, making it zero emissions and supporting Thailand's green transport policy.

The advantages of the EH216-S

The EH216-S measures a cruising speed of 90 km/h and can even reach up to 130 km/h. The interior features ergonomic seats and two 9.7-inch touchscreens that show passengers real-time flight data. Its lightweight carbon fiber construction and foldable arms make it particularly efficient and compact for urban use. Built for urban environments, this aircraft could be the perfect solution to the chronic traffic problems in cities like Bangkok.

Another exciting aspect is the planned launch of Air Taxi services in popular tourist areas such as Pattaya and Phuket. This could not only make it easier to get to attractions, but also set a new trend in tourism. The approval of these services would be a significant step forward for Thailand's air transport infrastructure, which EHang also encourages. The company has a partnership with the C.P. Group, which aims to establish a joint venture for the sale of autonomous aircraft in Thailand.

Together into the future

In this partnership, the C.P. Group and EHang are joining forces to ensure safe, autonomous and sustainable air mobility technologies are adopted in Thailand. Jiraporn Sudanich, the Consul General of the Thai Consulates in Guangzhou, highlights the importance of these technologies for the tourism and logistics sectors. And on top of that, promoting air taxis to combat what could be years-long traffic congestion is a key aspect Thai policymakers are focusing on.

It remains to be seen how this promising project will develop and what standards and legal regulations are still necessary to ensure the safe and efficient use of drones. What is clear is that Thailand is on the path to a new, more attractive air transport system, and we look forward to seeing how quickly this vision becomes a reality.
