Mega construction site in Bangkok: traffic turnaround thanks to the Orange Line subway!

The transport transition in Bangkok is at a critical point. Starting November 15, several overpasses will be closed and demolished to make way for the new Orange Line subway. This major renovation is expected to take more than six years and will have a significant impact on the traffic situation The Thaiger reported. In the city, which is already known for its traffic jams, the coming months could be a real challenge for drivers and commuters.

Construction sites and traffic changes

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has decided to close and demolish three key flyovers located at Pratunam, Ratchathewi and Sutthawat intersections. Construction of the stations at these intersections will begin simultaneously on November 15, 2023. Motorists should prepare for detours and delays as the first traffic restrictions come into effect on said date.

In addition to closing the overpasses, there are also plans to reduce lanes along the Orange Line construction. This particularly applies to the route from the railway authority to the bridge. The construction phase also includes a new turning lane in front of the railway authority and improvements to pedestrian paths for greater safety and accessibility. “We want to make the traffic situation as pleasant as possible during the construction period,” explains Major General Thawatch Wongsa, deputy police chief of Bangkok.

Information and support for citizens

Authorities are aware of the challenges posed by these large construction projects and are continually working on solutions. The Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) provides regular updates on the progress of construction work. Those interested can keep up to date on the Orange Line Project Facebook page or on TikTok @orangeline.pr. The MRTA is also available via its website mrta.co.th or by telephone on 0 2716 4044.

Citizens are encouraged to actively inform themselves about the construction site and plan their trips in advance to avoid tight traffic jams. The BMA announced that certain stretches of road will remain clear during the day, while most construction work will be carried out at night to minimize disruption to traffic flow.

Transport connections and metro expansion

Bangkok already has an extensive subway network, managed by operators BTS (Skytrain), MRT (Subway) and the Airport Rail Link (ARL). The new Orange Line will run from Bang Khun Non to Min Buri (Suwinthawong) and will fit into the existing transport infrastructure, providing air-conditioned and stress-free travel for tourists and locals.

There is great anticipation about the expansion of this network. “We believe the Orange Line will not only make commuting easier, but also increase Bangkok's attractiveness as a travel destination,” said Surapong Mienmit, deputy director of the Traffic and Transportation Policy Office.

The subway projects in Bangkok are an important step towards relieving road traffic, and despite the temporary challenges, expanding the rail network appears to be a long-term solution that could sustainably improve traffic flow in the metropolis.
