M STUDIO and SHOWBOX: A mega cooperation step for Thai films!

Thailand is making big strides in the film industry and can now announce a remarkable collaboration: M STUDIO, one of Thailand's leading film production companies, has partnered with Showbox, one of South Korea's largest film studios. This promising alliance aims to jointly advance the script development and production of Thai films. Surachet Asavareunganant, CEO of M STUDIO, emphasizes that this collaboration represents a great opportunity for the international marketing of Thai content and can raise production standards to a new level. Not only should Thai skilled workers benefit, but they should also have access to the Korean film industry.

The significance of this cooperation goes beyond pure film production. It is described as a strategic alliance that includes financial investments, manufacturing talent exchanges and comprehensive sales initiatives in domestic and international markets. “Showbox has a strong portfolio of blockbusters like ‘Exhuma’ and ‘The Host’, which shows that big things can come here,” reports Variety.

A look at the projects

What's next on the agenda? M STUDIO is planning several exciting films for the future that are in different genres: from thrillers to hospital comedies to action dramas. Upcoming productions include “The Last Shot,” “Jazz the Racing,” “Nakee 3,” “Riam Fighting Angel 2,” as well as “Bit by Bit” and “God Skin.” Showbox has also already made plans to enter the Thai market with films such as “The First Ride” and “White Blast”.

The Thai film industry currently has a 54% market share of the national box office. In 2024/2025, M STUDIO grossed over $50 million with the “Death Whisperer” trilogy alone. The vertical integration of the company, which is closely linked to the country's largest cinema chain, Major Cineplex, in turn allows comprehensive control over marketing strategies and theatrical release dates.

Thailand's rise on the international film stage

In a broader context, the Thai government is making significant efforts to establish the country as a leading film nation in Asia. This is happening under the leadership of Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, who is actively promoting the creative economy and the film industry. “With an incentive system that includes up to 20 percent discounts on local spending on foreign productions, we have created the first basis for a film-friendly environment,” emphasizes a government spokesman.

Right now, Thailand will be represented as a showcase of its film art at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, where a total of twelve Thai film companies will present their work. A dedicated Thailand pavilion will offer special screenings and events, and over 186 foreign film projects have already been realized in Thailand this year. This highlights the industry's huge growth potential, which will contribute to both job creation and increasing national income. “There is something going on, and you can feel it not only in Bangkok,” says an industry insider.

Overall, the new collaboration between M STUDIO and Showbox brings a breath of fresh air to Thai film production and opens doors for international collaboration and recognition. It remains exciting to see what creative fruits this alliance will bear and how it can influence the perception of Thailand on the global market.
