Loy Krathong 2025: Festival of Thai culture in Bangkok combines tradition and respect!
What's in the starting blocks? After today's cabinet meeting, Culture Minister Sabida Thaiseth presented the plans for the Loy Krathong Festival 2025. Under the theme “Loy Krathong Thai Thai, Honoring the Mother of the Nation,” the event will take place on November 5, 2025. The historical site of Wat Arun Ratchawararam Ratchawaramahawihan in Bangkok will be the focus. But it's not just the capital that is challenged; The festival is also held in 18 provinces and 5 identity provinces to promote local identity and culture and create some jobs and sustainable income.
The minister emphasized the close cooperation with a total of 33 organizations to ensure the planning of the festival. An integrative approach should be pursued in the areas of culture, society, economy and environment. Particular attention is also paid to the safety of citizens and tourists. The “One Krathong per Family” campaign applies and bread krathongs that promote environmental damage should not be used.
Tradition with respect
This year the Loy Krathong Festival will shine in a slightly different light. Activities will be adapted to reflect the mourning of Queen Sirikit. This means a focus on simplicity and respect, particularly with the recommendation of wearing traditional Thai clothing or subtle colors such as white and black.
On November 5, visitors can expect a variety of activities, from an exhibition honoring Queen Sirikit to displays of traditional Thai clothing to a cultural market offering local food and craft demonstrations. Interactive krathong making technology will also add to the experience.
UNESCO status in sight
Another exciting goal is on the agenda: Thailand is planning to apply for UNESCO intangible cultural heritage status for the Loy Krathong Festival. “The step is important for strengthening Thailand’s soft power,” emphasizes the Culture Minister. Loy Krathong was recognized as a national heritage site back in 2011 and is in the company of other cultural elements recognized by UNESCO.
Thailand aims to achieve developed country status by 2030. In this context, the Loy Krathong Festival plays a central role in preserving the country's cultural values while promoting the development of local economies. This great matter is not just about tradition, but about imparting knowledge and creating a living heritage that will be preserved for future generations.
Overall, the event and the desired UNESCO recognition are becoming increasingly important, not only for Thais but also for international guests who are invited to take part in the festival and experience Thai culture. Further information about the planned activities can be found on the Department of Cultural Promotion website.
For fans of Thai culture and the curious, this is the perfect opportunity to actively participate in the Loy Krathong Festival and experience a piece of Thai tradition up close.
