Safe footpaths in Bangkok: Nippon Paint launches bright project!
An important project to improve pedestrian safety was unveiled in Bangkok today. As part of the “WALK WITH COLORS” initiative, Nippon Paint Decorative Coating (Thailand) Co., Ltd. Working with the City of Bangkok to focus on safe walking routes for students and the surrounding community. Over 25 staff and volunteers, led by General Manager Watsara Siririthichai and Marketing Director Narongrit Malainuan, are involved in the effort, and support from local government officials ensures a broad base.
In total, the project covers a distance of 1,720 meters and an area of 1,118 square meters, distributed across four pilot schools in Dusit and Thonburi districts. The cost is more than 2 million baht. By painting the footpaths bright blue with white border lines and the words “Safe Footpaths”, which also glow at night, visibility for pedestrians is significantly improved. The aim is to reduce the risk of accidents and increase the quality of life of over 135,000 people in Bangkok. It is part of Nippon Paint's social mission “Colouring Lives”, which strives for positive change.
Pedestrian safety urgency
The need for such projects is undeniable given the current security situation in Bangkok. Studies show that many traffic accidents often occur near schools and hospitals. Chamaipan Santikarn, manager of the ThaiHealth motorcycle safety project, calls for more safety measures at pedestrian crossings. A recent accident in which a motorcycle hit a 68-year-old South Korean tourist has reignited the debate. Bangkok Post reports on the failure of existing security precautions and advocates for innovative solutions.
Similar technologies are used around the world to make footpaths safer. Smart systems such as the ELLUMIN Intelligent Pedestrian System, which includes illuminated signs and audible warning systems, have been introduced in China. South Korea has additionally installed smart crosswalks with ground lights specifically designed for pedestrians who are at risk due to blocked sight lines.
Cultural connections
An interesting cultural aspect is the connection to Japan, a country known for its reliable transportation systems and innovative security measures. Japan is valued not only for its impressive cities, but also for its high quality of life. Almost 75% of the country is mountainous and covered in forests, which increasingly concentrates the urbanized population in the coastal regions. In terms of technology and innovation, Japan has a global reputation for developing advanced solutions, including security measures, which can also serve as a model in Bangkok.
Compared to other countries facing similar challenges, Thailand could benefit from these nations' experiences and technologies. Wikipedia highlights the cultural and technological advances that regularly contribute to improving the quality of life of its citizens.
With the launch of the “WALK WITH COLORS” project, Bangkok shows that local initiatives to improve pedestrian safety are not only necessary but also feasible. The next challenge is to carry these advances into the future.
