Fare increase in Bangkok: Why 65 baht is now due!

There are currently significant changes in public transport in Bangkok. From November 1, 2025, fares for the expanded green subway line will increase. How Line Today reported, the new price for passengers is between 17 and 45 baht. The previous prices of 15 baht would now be a thing of the past.

The decision to make this adjustment is related to the high operating costs. Bangkok spends a whopping 9,012 million baht annually on the maintenance and operation of the subway extension. At the same time, the current revenue of only 2,400 million baht brings an annual loss of over 6,000 million baht. In order to ensure sustainable growth of the subway system in the metropolis, the price adjustments are urgently necessary.

Discounts for passengers

But there are also bright spots for users: children and students up to the age of 23 receive a 30 percent discount, while seniors aged 60 and over can even save 50 percent. In addition, the fare remains unchanged for travelers traveling exclusively in the old concession area. For travel between the existing and new lines, the maximum price is 65 baht.

The city administration's concern is clear: they want to improve the quality of public transport in Bangkok in the long term and at the same time make all citizens aware of its importance. The public is invited to direct any questions or suggestions to the Department of Traffic and Transport either by calling 02 354 1211 or via the website traffic.bangkok.go.th.

Bangkok and its transport system

Bangkok is famous for its diverse and often challenging transport system. With a combination of city trains, buses, songthaews, canal boats and river ferries, residents and tourists have plenty of options for getting around. The BTS SkyTrain and the MRT in particular offer good connections for commuters and visitors, such as Thaiest highlights.

The light rail system consists of a total of seven light rail systems with ten lines, including the well-known BTS SkyTrain with its light green and dark green lines and the MRT with the blue and purple lines. At the same time, the canal and river boats allow you to explore the city picturesquely from the water. The Rabbit Card is a useful tool for easily using the various systems, whether for the subway or the SkyTrain.

Recommendations for tourists

For tourists, the journey to Bangkok is as uncomplicated as it is adventurous. The city has two main airports: Suvarnabhumi for international flights and Don Mueang for domestic flights. It is recommended to stay in well-connected areas to make it easier to use public transport. It is particularly important to note that separate tickets are required for the different means of transport - an aspect that often makes orientation difficult when staying in the city.

The public transport network, like Fascination with Southeast Asia explained, many tourists may avoid as buses and canal boats are often difficult to navigate for outsiders. Nevertheless, water transport offers some of the most beautiful views and opportunities to experience Bangkok's culture up close. Visiting the many well-known sights along the Chao Phraya can easily be done with an express boat.

With the new price adjustments, the challenges of urban transport in Bangkok become even more apparent, but the city remains an exciting destination for those looking to experience the vibrant life of Southeast Asia.
